Remdesivir: Why is there a shortage of this Covid-19 drug, do you need it?
Remdesivir, an injectable anti-viral drug repurposed for Covid-19 treatment, has been flying off the shelves of pharmacies over the last few weeks ever since India began reporting a steep rise in cases of the novel coronavirus. At least three states — Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra — have reported shortages of the experimental therapy drug.
Due to the increased demand, the Centre has banned the export of Remdesivir and its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). Remdesivir, which was cleared by the country’s top drug regulator for restricted use in an emergency situation in June 2020, is being used in treatment of Covid-19 patients with severe complications.
